Young Apprenticeships

We are looking for forward thinking companies in the Catering and Hospitality sector who would like to give an extended work experience placement to one of our excellent Young Apprentices (one day per week for up to 2 years).

To get a place on this course students must be generally bright, motivated and interested in a career in the industry.

All of these students will spend two days per week out of school during their GCSE years, including:

• 1 day at Croydon College learning skills and theory
• 1 day on a related work experience placement

This year the day on work experience is Friday, next year we expect it to be Thursday.

The day in College will be spent partly in croydon's new training kitchens, learning the skills they will need when they are out on their work placement.  They will also learn the theory that is needed to really understand and work in hotels, restaurants, etc.

When they are on the work placement, they will spend the first few weeks observing other people at work and then, when they feel more confident they will be able to help out and demonstrate their new skills and knowledge.

For the other three days they will be at school, where they will continue to follow the core national curriculum subjects, including Maths, English, ICT and Science.

The qualifications to be studied are mostly likely to be:

• Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Diploma (Certificate) in Hospitality (Equivalent of 2-4 GCSEs A-C)
• NVQ Level 1 in Food Preparation & Cooking (Q1051671). Equivalent of 2-4 GCSEs D-G)
• Level 2 Technical Certificate in Health & Safety and Food Hygiene (Industry Standard Certificate)
• Key Skills Level 2 in Communication (English), Numeracy (maths) and Problem Solving.
